The City of Mason City, Iowa, holds a Civil Service Commis­sion's entrance examinations for the full-time position of Fire Fighter approximately every two years. The last test was in 2015; the next anticipated testing is May 2017. The entrance examinations consist of written and physical ability examina­tions.  Applicants must hold an EMT-B or higher certification (National or Iowa) in order to test.  Testing is done on a Saturday at the Mason City Fire Department, 350 5th St SW, Mason City, IA.


Applications - Only applicants who have completed the City's application and complied with all pre-testing requirements and deadlines can take the written and physical ability tests. Applications can be completed and submitted from the City’s webpage electronically or originally submitted to the Human Resources Department at City Hall (10 1st St NW, Mason City, IA. More information can be found on the City's Human Resources site regarding testing, applications and any open position usually 30 days before a scheduled testing. 


Minimum Standards for Hiring - Applicants must be a high school graduate or hold a GED certificate. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age at time of employment. Prior to hiring, individuals must comply with all State of Iowa standards for fire fighters, including no record of felony convictions or crimes of moral turpitude. Individuals must have a valid driver's license with a good driving record in accordance with City policy.  Applicants cannot be considered if they have been convicted of driving under the influence within the past five years. Pre-employment physical and drug testing will be done as a condition of employment.


Testing – Applicants who have submitted a completed application, will receive a packet detailing the scope and requirements for the written and physical ability testing. The packet sent out will also explain the exact nature of all documentation required to be presented before an applicant can sit for the written test. This packet will also provide the applicants with information regarding the scope of the physical ability tests.


Civil Service List - Applicants who successfully pass the written and physical ability tests may be placed on the Department's Civil Service List.  All fire fighters are hired from a current Civil Service Commission list.


Special Requirements for Fire Fighters - Fire fighters at the Mason City Fire Department must:  obtain a Class D Chauffeurs license prior to starting employment; live within 10 miles of the City's limits within 6 months; be Fire Fighter I certified no more than 1 year after their employment starts; and have Paramedic certification within 3 years.


Salary and Benefits - Starting salary is $38,563 to $40,760 annually  depending upon EMT certification level and education.  The City of Mason City provides excellent benefits to its fire fighters, including:  paid vacation; 2 paid holidays (off); holiday pay for 9 holidays; health insurance and life insurance (for employees and their dependents); retirement benefits through the State's 411 Municipal Fire & Police Retirement System; uniform allowance; dental insurance (optional) and flexible health benefits (optional).
