 MCFD Building 2017

The Mason City Fire Department was started in 1870 as a volunteer fire department. By 1909 the Department was a fully-paid career department. The Department works out of one fire station centrally located in the City at 350 5th St SW. This is only the fourth building to ever house the Fire Department.

In June 2004, the Mason City Fire Department started providing ambulance services to Mason City and surrounding communities. The Department is staffed by 48 dedicated and skilled men and women who are committed to the Fire Department's mission of serving those in need - safely.  All firefighters at the Fire Department are licensed at an EMT-B level or higher!!  42 firefighters are divided equally between three battalions, each shift is 24 hours long and starts at 8:00 am. The City is covered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to ensure a quick and professional response.

In addition to fire and ambulance services, the Fire Bureau of the Fire Department provides fire safety education throughout Mason City. The Fire Marshal and the firefighter assigned to the Fire Bureau also conduct hundreds of safety inspections throughout the City each year and train hundreds of citizens in the City on the proper use of fire extinguishers.

The firefighters at the Department are also trained in hazardous material responses and a wide variety of technical rescues.
